Parks in Abruzzo

In Abruzzo, nature is a protected resource.

With a third of its territory destined to parks, the region not only expresses a cultural and civil primacy in the protection of the environment, but it is placed as the greatest naturalistic area of Europe, the true green heart of the Mediterranean.

SEA PARK TORRE DEL CERRANO

Between heaven and earth, a protected stretch of water where to cultivate the precious resources of the sea. The marine area of ​​the Torre del Cerrano is located in Abruzzo, the “green region of Europe” with over 30% of the protected territory.

In the section of Teramo, between two municipalities, Pineto and Silvi, the marine area delimits seven kilometers of coastline and completes a program of protection and enhancement of the environment alongside the network of underwater oases that have allowed, in recent years, the protection, restocking and the study of the marine ecosystem.

In the name, actually a toponym, “Torre del Cerrano”, the symbols of the history and identity of this territory.

Cerrano, the stream that descends from the hills of Atri – where you will find the splendid calanques, another protected area – and flows into the marina of Silvi, and the Tower, built in 1568 by the Spaniards, bulwark against the Saracen pirates. NATURE RESERVE OF CALANCHI DI ATRI

The Reserve, identified as a Site of Community Interest (SCI), contains forms of erosion that here take on an impressive appearance: the gullies, also known as Dante or Dante’s bolts, are produced by water runoff on clayey and marly soils with no cover wooded.
The evocative scenery of its gullies, deriving from the erosion of a particular type of clays, is protected by the Natural Reserve of the Calanchi di Atri. The scarce vegetation includes typical species of desert climates such as the

caper, wild artichoke, licorice. Along the small watercourses are spread the river crab and the skunk, in addition to the ubiquitous foxes; However, one of the most particular guests of the badlands is undoubtedly the porcupine.

ABRUZZO NATIONAL PARK

Born in 1922, it is the oldest and most important in Italy. In it are concentrated almost all the characters that distinguish the central Apennines, including elements of flora and fauna

MAJELLA NATIONAL PARK

The Majella National Park is characterized by the high altitude of its territory, in fact, 55% is located at altitudes above 2000 meters.
